Double sink: pros and cons

Quite recently, a completely fresh and new tandem plumbing, namely a double sink, has appeared on the modern domestic market. The design consists of two tanks, which are combined on one frame.

The installation of double sinks is not much different from the installation of a standard washbasin.

They are divided by type into several types:

• Overhead. These sinks have a cabinet in the kit and are the easiest to install. In order for the product to work, you just need to connect the mixers to the water supply system and install siphons.
• Hinged. They are second in complexity to install, but they have the lowest price of all the types presented.They also need to connect faucets and install siphons, and also need to fix the sink on special supporting supports.

• Embedded. In this case, the sink just hit the countertop. Everything else is carried out exactly as with other sinks.

A convenient and practical option is a sink with a cabinet in which you can store all the necessary accessories and inventory. The main thing is that both of these elements are always in harmony with each other.

Washbasins can be square, rectangular, round, oval or asymmetrical.

Depending on the design of the sink is:

• with one solid base, which is divided into two sinks;
• with two containers that are fastened together.

Of the features of the installation should highlight the following points:

• perfect symmetry - siphons, mixers and so on for both sinks should be identical;
• due to the severity of the construction, the fasteners must be as strong as possibleand the mount itself is better to carry on the frame of metal or cabinet. The distance between containers should be about 80–90 cm.

Double shells are mainly distinguished by the material from which they are made:

• Ceramics. The most popular and common are ceramic shells. They are characterized by an attractive design that fits perfectly in almost any bathroom interior. Ceramics has several specific features. So, it is quite resistant to various scratches and it does not spoil its aesthetic appearance, but is easily damaged by mechanical effects. This cannot be fixed, therefore a complete replacement of the product is required.

• Porcelain tiles. The difference of porcelain stoneware from ordinary ceramics is enclosed in an additional element, which is part of, and the nominal granite chips. Due to this, the performance is increased, the strength is significantly increased. Such shells easily tolerate any mechanical damage or the fall of heavy objects.

• Glass. Glass models are also gaining popularity, despite the ambiguity of the material.Due to the flexibility of glass, articles made of it can take the most diverse and unique forms. The surface of the glass shell can also be different: matte or glossy, smooth or grooved. Many customers are concerned about the strength of the product, but in the production is used not simple, but red-hot glass. This ensures the impact resistance of the washbasin, prevents the formation of cracks during operation, and this glass also repels moisture and does not accumulate dirt on the surface. The only drawback is that, with increased hardness of the water, plaque remains on the walls of the sink.

• Composite materials. They are characterized by high impact resistance and resistance to aggressive chemicals, such as household chemicals. However, such constructions are heavier and more expensive.
• A natural stone. Natural stone washbasins are an interesting design solution with high decoration. However, acquiring a stone sink, it is important to understand that this material is demanding, it easily absorbs various odors and pigments.

• Stainless steel. Usually steel and metal sinks are installed in the kitchen. In the process of use, they are quite noisy, various scratches, abrasions and mineral deposits quickly appear on the surface. Therefore, stainless steel is in less demand, but has a lower price compared to counterparts.

Most often, the size of the double sink is compact enough, which may not be very convenient. The distance between two containers should be at least 90 cm so that two people standing side by side do not interfere with each other.

The depth and width of the shell is chosen the same way as with conventional models. That is, the width should be about 60–70 cm, and the depth should be from 50 to 60 cm. The height is determined depending on the anthropometric data of family members. The standard height is 80–100 cm, but this is not always convenient. An average man is comfortable using a wash basin 110–120 cm high, whereas a woman is 80–90 cm sufficient.

The color of the model can be very different. A classic black or gray sink emphasizes the sophistication and elegance of the bathroom. It will fit most interior solutions, especially modern, classic or minimalist styles.

Calm and relaxing atmosphere will bring in the interior blue and shades of blue. Lilac color will also perfectly highlight the airiness of the room. Red and pink shades provide a romantic and magical atmosphere.

Yellow, green and orange shades will make the bathroom shine and will please the eye with summer-spring freshness. Shells can combine several colors at the same time. Furniture can be selected in similar shades or in contrast, and one cannot forget about finishing.

Today, foreign-made sinks are more popular due to their simple installation and operation. However, Russian brands are practically indistinguishable from their foreign counterparts, the difference is noticeable only in value.

The budget Italian brand is considered a firm. Hatria, as it provides models costing from 10 to 20 thousand rubles.

• When purchasing a double sink, you should ask the seller about the special siphon, due to which you can connect with both drains to the so-called tee, so as not to change the sewer system.
• Before choosing and making a purchase, it is important to measure your own bathroom, draw a plan and see if there will be a place to house the structure.

• Next, you should decide on the type of construction, siphon, what material it will be made of.
• Masters are advised to choose separate sinks, which are installed on a single base, as the personal space increases.
• It is important to purchase high-quality mixers so that they last as long as possible. Preference is better to split mixers, since their functionality is much higher.

The advantages of a double sink include several points:

• Expanding area for washing. In this case, two people can easily fit in without disturbing each other at all. This issue is particularly relevant in large families, where everyone is in a hurry to go to school or to work.
• The infection is isolated. Reducing the number of users of one sink prevents the spread of infection from one person to another. For example, in European countries it is practiced to separate the washbasin separately for children and for adults, then some do not infect others.

• Increases personal space. Through hygiene procedures, family members feel comfortable, no one bothers anyone. Normally, each person should have not only a separate sink, but also their own cabinets with hygienic accessories.

However, there are some drawbacks:

1. Bathroom should be big, since the design is large and in a small room simply does not fit. If there is a desire to install the product in a limited space, then you should initially draw a plan and calculate the remaining free space.
2. Price. Double sink expensive product. However, if its installation solves the problem of the queue in the bathroom in the morning, then very few people will pay attention to the price.
3. Cleaning. Cleaning this sink will take longer than the standard one.

Dual sinks on the modern market can be found in numerous design solutions. White washbasins, made in simple geometric forms, will perfectly fit into a discreet and austere interior, and will also harmoniously look in bathrooms with a minimalist style. However, it would be inappropriate to have a large number of different jars and tubes. Everything should be neat and modest. Personal hygiene items should be kept in bedside tables.

Natural materials are able to bring an exotic touch to the interior, which will be appropriate in Scandinavian, tropical or oriental styles.The sink can have the form of a bowl, be half embedded in a wall or completely united into one single container. The style is emphasized by the appropriate decor, flowers, shelves, a beautiful mirror with a pattern, baskets, candles and so on.

At the discretion of the owner, the sink can be decorated, for example, under the modern or antique style. For modern and futuristic solutions, washbasins of irregular, asymmetrical shape, which will become the main focus, are perfect. Or you can install two separate sinks at some distance from each other, they will not be connected.
