 Cupboard: Selection Features

The closet-dresser is, first of all, a piece of furniture that resembles a small-sized wardrobe with several drawers or storage compartments equipped with doors. This is really a handy thing that saves space, but there are also some particularities in the choice of this piece of furniture.

Species

First of all, you should deal with what kind of cabinets, dressers are.

As a rule, they are divided by functionality:

  1. Linen closets, dressers. The classic version, which, however, can easily be used and for other purposes. Drawers of such dressers, as a rule, are rather bulky, therefore, they are suitable for storing not only clothes, but also dishes, books or stationery.
  2. Cabinets, dressers for books. Something reminiscent of high library cabinets, only smaller and narrower.
  3. Cabinets, dressers with mirror. A great find in the bedroom or bathroom, especially the girls will appreciate it. As a rule, it is a classic rectangular commode of half human height with a mirror located approximately at chest level. Sometimes they have a notch in the middle, where they could put a chair, are often equipped with elements such as lighting, carved design or additional shelves on the surface.

Sizes and shapes

Much depends on the size and shape of the dresser, for example, whether the furniture in the room will look harmonious, but, first of all, whether the wardrobe-dresser will fit into the niche that you have allocated for it.

For example, if you need to keep space in the room, then a tall and narrow chest of drawers with rather large shelves and compartments inside is very convenient. It takes up much less space than a classic rectangular, but at the expense of its height it usually contains more shelves (up to 8), and you do not lose a single centimeter.

As for the forms, the modern production is a choice of a huge number of them - from squares to crescents, however, classic is still considered a rectangular shape, stretched up or horizontally, with a height of about 70-80 cm from the floor, and about a meter wide.

Materials

Traditionally, dressers are made of wood, so they have approximately the same appearance. However, some differences in wood types also exist.

  • Oak. The first thing to say is the most popular wood species used in the manufacture of furniture. Differs in durability, high cost, durability and beauty.
  • Ash. A very flexible breed that can withstand various deformations, and as a result, is quite strong. Dressers made of ash, as a rule, very refined.
  • Cherry. The properties of this wood are similar to the properties of ash, chests of cherries are very refined. Cherry is most often used for carved cabinets, chest of drawers of rounded forms and any other furniture with glass or mirror stained glass. This breed is not as strong and solid, but it is easy to process, but also has a natural mahogany shade.
  • Beech. Breed, superior strength even oak. It is easily painted in any tone, however, very often it is left unchanged - this applies mostly to delicate light pink beech.

Even with such a popularity of natural solid wood, one can not fail to mention chipboard and MDF:

  • Chipboard (chipboard) - These are sawdust and chips remaining from logging, glued together with resin. Since it is, in fact, waste production, chipboard is inexpensive, and is used very widely. It is quite dense, durable, so the cabinets are made of good quality, especially with regard to furniture for the middle class. However, when buying furniture made of chipboard, you must ask the managers for certificates of compliance with sanitary and hygienic standards and GOST standards, since the resins that join the sawdust are often used formaldehyde.

Do not be afraid, if we are talking about formaldehyde resins of class E1 - they are quite safe even for children, but in the case of E2 you need to be worried.

  • MDF - it is dried fine wood fibers, almost wood dust, combined into a single canvas with resins. Resins here, by the way, are safer, the concentration of formaldehyde is several times lower, and in some cases this substance is generally avoided, preferring to be replaced with paraffin and lignin. MDF is considered to be completely environmentally friendly material, so its price is higher than the price of chipboard.

Another advantage of MDF is its compliance - from it you can cut out virtually any small figured details, and dressers made of this material are usuallyhave decorative processing.

Colors

Thanks to modern production, the wardrobe can be found in literally any color, however, natural colors are still very popular. Designers are used to allocate several natural color groups as to what material the dresser is made of:

  1. Cream shades, sand: birch, pine, maple, ash, beech.
  2. Brown-yellow shades, ocher: oak, alder, teak, cedar.
  3. Brown-orange shades, copper: cherry, tic, mahogany.
  4. Dark brown shades, dark chocolate: walnut.
  5. Black-brown, almost ink: rosewood, amaranth, eben.

Also, speaking of the dresser coloring, it is impossible not to mention the natural patterns on their surface, because these patterns, combined with the shade of a tree, make the dresser unique. Patterns on each copy will differ, after all there are no two completely identical trees.

By the way, chests of drawers, having rather pronounced patterns on their surface, should be combined with plain wallpaper and other interior items in order not to look flashy. The reverse principle applies to the case of monochromatic knotted dressers and, for example, curtains with beautiful bright patterns.

How to choose furniture?

First of all, when choosing a dresser, you should focus on what you are going to store there, and do not forget that the purpose of the dresser will differ, depending on the room, so much depends on the location.

In the hallway

For example, if you choose a closet in the hallway, be guided by the fact that, most likely, you will keep there shoes, clothes and things that are not so often used in everyday life - various tools and similar accessories.

A chest of drawers in the hallway should not be large in size: the room is often narrow and free space is not superfluous. Here it is categorically not recommended to put volumetric or carved dressers with excessive decor - this is, firstly, in most cases does not match the design of the hallway, and, secondly, these decorations wear out quickly, and the dresser takes on a sloppy look.

In the living room

Very often, dressers are used in living rooms - this is also a convenient storage for many things, and a stand for decorative objects, and in themselves they very well complement the interior.

In fact, there are no strict limitations in choosing a dresser for a living room - everything here really depends, rather, on the style of the room and its relationship with the style of the dresser.

The furniture should look appropriate - there can be no carved “plump” dresser in the case of a minimalist living room.

By the way, dressers with transparent glass doors can look very elegant in the living room, especially if you use this piece of furniture instead of a wall, for storing sets or any other beautiful dishes. It will look like the appropriate "decor". And it will also be a very practical move, because when you receive guests you won't have to go far.

The same applies to the use of the dresser as a bar.

To the bedroom

But if you choose a dresser-cabinet for a bedroom, you should focus on what you will use it for - to keep there clothes, small trinkets (like in the hallway, for example), books or it will be something like a dressing table for you.

With the last option, everything is clear - it is, as a rule, a horizontally elongated chest of drawers with several compartments (for cosmetics and some wardrobe items) and with a mirror approximately at chest level.

The mirror, by the way, can also visually expand the space.

If you use a dresser as a closet for storing clothes,It is recommended to pay attention to the furniture with large drawers, there should be at least four of them (for linen, upper and lower clothes, as well as a spare department) and strong doors, because they will open often.

In the case of choosing a wardrobe for books, pay attention to the wide or high, but narrow instances - so you can put a large number of books on display with the spines forward and you do not have to go deep into the shelves to find the right one. This principle, by the way, is effective in any room, whether it be even a living room or a classical library.

In the nursery

The principle of choosing the locker-dresser for the nursery is similar to the principle of choice for the living room. However, remember that you may need an extra department for toys.

In the bathroom

Choosing a dresser for a bathroom, pay attention to its size - it should be compact, because, as a rule, there is not much space here. In addition to the small size, it is desirable to have a mirror, and it is better to open cabinets with doors.

It will be just great if the dresser will combine shelves and drawers. The first ones are suitable for storing hygienic accessories, and the second - for various textiles, towels or sponges / washcloths.

Beautiful ideas in the interior

If you do not know how to place a chest of drawers in the room, but are sure that this is the piece of furniture that you want to buy, then pay attention to some ideas about its location.

For example, a very successful and practical version of the location of this piece of furniture, and even more than one, in the living room. The wardrobe-dresser, which stands next to one of the sofas, plays a very interesting role: on the one hand, it is invisible from the center of the room, which visually increases the space, and on the other, it divides the living room into a rest area and a free space zone.

The same cabinets, which are located near the wall, bear not only the role of a beautiful and appropriate decor, which successfully frames the fireplace. They are also functional: they can accommodate both books, and an old service, and even some of the equipment. Of course, this combination of furniture is very successful.

Another option is a long high dresser-wardrobe, which repeats exactly any shade of the furniture already in the room, complementing its color scheme. In this case, the cabinet will not just be a good acquisition, it will attract the eye and can become a real accent of the interior, and if you are not opposed to its similar role, take note of this option.

But an interesting dresser with a mirror, which can be located both in the living room and in the bedroom, the main thing is that it fits the interior. Note that it is wide enough, but not bulky, which will save space. The mirror also helps to expand this space visually, and the surface is a convenient tabletop, onto which you can put both flowers and a lampshade or a set.

You may also be interested in this option with the location of the TV on the surface of the closet, like, for example, here. It saves great space, makes the chest even more functional. And if you look closely, you can see that there is a glassware behind the glass, that is, the wardrobe-dresser plays a double role, and this undoubtedly attracts.
