Features of dismantling slate

Over time, roofing may need to be replaced or repaired. And sometimes the tenants simply have a desire to change the appearance of the building. The first thing to start in this situation is to remove the slate. It is necessary to do this correctly, so as not to damage the roll roof, crate, other elements, and the slate itself, which if necessary can be used in the future for household needs.

Security measures

As with any construction work, when dismantling the slate should observe safety precautions. Consider the main points that should be taken into account.

First of all, you can not carry out work in rainy weather. In addition to the danger posed by the wet coating itself, the lichen growing on it can also be quite slippery when wet. Therefore, during work, the roof must be completely dry. This will minimize the risk of injury.

Before you start dismantling the roof, you need to check its reliability. The design must be strong enough not to fall under the weight of the people on it.

Work should be in tight clothes, gloves and a respirator, as well as comfortable non-slip shoes.

When a number of slate sheets are removed, it will also be necessary to dismantle the waterproofing material so that it does not obstruct movement across the crate. It is necessary to move around the roof using ladders that have special hooks for fastening on the ridge of the roof. With their help, the weight is distributed more evenly, even on a larger surface area. So the old slate will not break.

It is recommended to use safety cords that can protect against injury in case of accidental fall. They should also catch on the horse. In addition, the area of the slate slope should be fenced off. It is important to ensure that there are no people under it during the dismantling process. The weight of the slate sheet is about 20 kilograms, and its fall on a person can lead to serious consequences.

Technology without saving sheets

For greater efficiency, it is recommended to disassemble not alone. The best would be the presence of two or three workers. However, in the absence of assistants, you can cope on your own.

The easiest way to get rid of the old coating, if it is damaged and unsuitable for use. In this case, there is no need to save the materials themselves. Usually slate is fixed with nails. This means that to remove it, there will be enough stairs, a ramp, a nail puller, a hammer and a knife, which can be cut off waterproofing materials.

Work should begin with the top and top row of slate sheets. A nail puller pulls out the fastener on which the horse hangs. Sheets are usually laid with overlap on the next, and they should be removed, starting with the very last.

Since the preservation of slate sheets in the whole form is irrelevant, in order to remove the sheet, you can simply strike the nail head with a hammer. This will help to drive it into a wooden base.

The slate itself with such an action makes its way, and it becomes easy to remove it as a whole, or for individual breakaway elements. After that, you need to remove the fasteners from the crates and continue to work on the same principle.

Technology with saving sheets

If it is decided that the slate leaves need to be preserved without damage for further use, the dismantling technology will be different from the previous version. It requires the utmost accuracy.

First, you also need to remove the ridge element. After that, slate is removed, but in the opposite order from the previous one, that is, from the bottom of the roof. Nails must be removed very carefully so as not to spoil the material. After the slate is free from fastenings, you need to lower it to the ground, holding it carefully. In order not to harm the material, when pulling nails, you need to use a small board that is placed under the heel of the nail puller.

If the slate was attached to the screws, they need to be carefully unscrewed. This method is much simpler than the previous one, but it is suitable only for dismantling relatively new roofs. If the installation was carried out using pierced nails, it must be borne in mind that it is almost impossible to remove them without damaging the material. In this case, the only way is to cut or bite off the cap.

Material removal

Alone, to carry out this procedure is not easy. The best option is to conduct work with the participation of three people.

In this case, the task of the first of them will be the dismantling of fasteners. In this case, the person must either stand on the crate, not covered with slate sheets, or on the stairs.

The location of the second should be on skate or not far from it. This helper will hold the slate sheet, fasten it with a rope and most gently lower it down.

The third person should be close to the roof. His task is to take a flat sheet, untie the rope from him and carry him to a previously organized place.

If there are no helpers, independent work is recommended to start from below. The extreme element must be freed from the fasteners and gently release from under the other sheet. In this case, to lower the materials with a rope is not very convenient. A more effective solution would be to install several long boards between the ground and the eaves of the roof. On them it will be easier to lower the sheets due to the fact that they will start to rest against each other. You do not need to take each sheet separately.

Start the descent is better to close any soft material. This will prevent splitting slate sheets during descent.
