Glue for clinker tiles: the rules of choice

The brick tile proved as reliable and esthetic material for external and internal finishing. But in view of the special conditions in which this material is in use, and the specific properties of the clinker itself, the choice of adhesive should be seriously considered.

The brick tile represents the plates from natural clay processed in a special way. The material is fired at temperatures above 1000 degrees, and then pressed into tiles or briquettes of the desired size.

However, the special strength of such a tile makes it vulnerable due to the fact that when exposed to temperature and other factors, its deformation coefficient and expansion coefficient are much lower than those of a concrete or brick wall. In other words, when conditions change, this durable material may detach from the surface of the facade, since it is much less susceptible to flexibility and deformation.

Another disadvantage of clinker tiles is their heavy weight. Densely compacted burnt clay acquires a large mass, even if it is formed into relatively small elements, such as tiles or finishing bricks.

The above features of the material indicate the need for proper selection of glue. It is on the strength of the connection with the surface will depend on the appearance and durability of the entire decorative finish. The discharge or cleavage of individual elements significantly spoils the aesthetics of the appearance of the facade, balcony or steps of clinker.

The adhesive mixture for the finishing elements of clinker must, above all, meet the following requirements:

• Increased viscosity of the adhesive solution. Only glue of sufficient viscosity and concentration will be able to keep the clinker tile during curing. Otherwise, the elements may move away from the surface in the process of gluing.
• Good moisture resistance and resistance to temperature extremes. Due to the fact that most often external elements get off with clinker, the adhesive solution should also tolerate the effects of external weather and temperature conditions.

• Sufficient elasticity of the adhesive composition. Due to the low moisture absorption coefficient, the clinker tile will not be able to fit well on the surface when using hard glue.
• High adhesive performance. High adhesion (adhesion) is needed so that the heavy clay elements firmly fixed on the surface, especially on the vertical, and in the process of drying the glue does not move.

By type and composition, adhesive solutions are:

• Cement. It is one of the most widely used types of solutions.Such adhesives are well suited for both exterior and interior applications. Such an adhesive mixture combines all the qualities necessary for fixing a clinker tile: sufficient viscosity, elasticity and adhesion strength. The basis of this composition is cement, it is supplemented by plasticizers and modifying additional elements.

• Single component blends. The composition of this adhesive solution is monotonous. Glue is easy to use, as it is sold in ready-made form in metal buckets of various sizes. However, a significant drawback that can adversely affect the laying of tiles in a vertical position is the relatively long drying time of such a composition.
• Two-component adhesive mixtures. Such adhesives have an epoxy base. Resins and hardener are included. Before use, both components are kneaded until a homogeneous adhesive mass is obtained.

In the Russian market, adhesive mixtures and compositions of the following brands have proven themselves well:

• "Extrabond". These adhesive composition is produced in our country.The mixture is versatile and suitable for interior decoration, as well as for exterior decoration of facades and decorative elements of buildings. Glue has a high rate of frost resistance.
• Adhesive composition RKS. It is mainly used for laying clinker tiles and other indoor elements. The distinctive quality of this glue is its high moisture resistance. Use of this mix for external works in the conditions of a temperate climate is allowed.

• Ceresit CM. It has excellent elasticity, high moisture resistance. Often and successfully used for decoration of rooms with high humidity, such as swimming pools and showers.
• Glue structure of "Quick mix Baumacol". It has the greatest elasticity. It withstands temperature extremes and other external factors. Perfectly holds clinker tiles on structures of complex construction, such as stoves, fireplaces, multi-level decorative elements.

When choosing adhesive for clinker tiles It is worth remembering a few simple rules and tips that will help you choose the best and most suitable adhesive composition by properties:

• You should choose glue, which by its qualities and characteristics strictly corresponds to the conditions under which you plan to use it.In other words, it is impossible to use compositions for interior work on external facades and elements. Indicators such as moisture resistance, resistance to temperature extremes should also be taken into account.

• Even the so-called universal adhesives often have a number of limitations and requirements for operating conditions. In any case, it is necessary to carefully examine the packaging for the composition and specific properties of the selected adhesive.
• Modern manufacturers produce adhesives that contain components to protect against the development of mold and mildew. This is a useful additional feature, especially if the tile is laid on the external facade or in a room with high humidity.

• Significantly improve the quality of work can use grout from the same company as your chosen glue. Glue and grout from different manufacturers may contain heterogeneous incompatible materials.
• Do not rush to give up cheaper counterparts. Carefully read the composition, description of properties and instructions. Many inexpensive formulations and mixtures are not inferior in quality to costly.
