How to glue paper wallpaper?
Now for the latest construction materials is difficult to keep track. Types of wallpaper a huge amount. But if we want a budget, quickly and fashionably to trim their homes, then still turn to paper wallpaper. Proper sticking is the basis for the durability and beauty of this coating.
Special features
Paper wallpaper is common in interior design for a very long time, but do not lose their popularity. Thanks to progressive developments, now this modern high-quality coating is sometimes not inferior to other types of finishing materials.
Their main difference is that they have a low price. The basis of natural material (cellulose) gives the wallpaper the ability to pass air. Therefore, they are often recommended for the decoration of the nursery.
But the paper is completely unable to contact with water, so that in rooms with high humidity it is better not to use them.
Kinds
There are several varieties of paper finishing.
By the number of layers the wallpaper is:
- Simplex (single layer). They are the least durable and therefore the cheapest. And also have a smooth texture;
- Duplex (multilayer). They are stronger than single-layer, well glued, but require more composition. Using them you can solve the problem with defects on the walls.
By moisture resistance:
- Unstable - in no case can they be used in rooms with high humidity. And if you get them dirty, then there's nothing you can do;
- Washable (have an upper protective layer). They can be used in the kitchen, but it is still better not to use it in the bathroom. Care and cleaning - treatment with a damp cloth.
Textured paper wallpapers are divided into:
- Smooth. Most often these are ordinary simplex wallpapers;
- Embossed. The coating consists of two layers, has a relief and volume, given by the method of embossing the pattern;
- Foam wallpaper also layered. Acrylic is applied between two layers of paper and heated, with the result that it becomes foamy and increases the strength of the wallpaper. Acrylic products with a dusting fascinate with beauty and a variety of relief drawings;
- Wallpaper with chips. The shavings between layers of paper as a result of pressing gives a relief surface, such wallpapers do not lose their naturalness;
- For painting. This is a textured wallpaper, which is supposed to paint;
- Wallpaper with a paper layer. In this case, the paper is combined with other materials - interlining, fabrics, cork and veneer. Coating properties can vary greatly depending on the second material.
Overlap or butt?
Paper wallpaper can be glued in two ways: by laying the canvas on each other with a gap or joining them together. Budget thin wallpaper can be glued over to each other. The edge edge is most often present on them. The overlap pasting method will also help to correct minor camber and hollow walls. Overlapping pasting technology is used in new buildings and wooden houses because there is a risk of shrinkage, misalignment and the appearance of defects on surfaces. If the base of the wall has significant flaws, and the wallpaper is selected heavy and embossed, then you should abandon this technique.
The technique of gluing wallpaper docking is somewhat more complicated than the previous one. After all, the joints should turn out without gaps, ideally smooth and neat.In the case of the most accurate docking you get a beautiful and uniform surface. If the wall has significant curvature, then it must first be leveled to avoid unsightly gaps on the wallpaper.
Materials and tools
Before pasting the wallpaper, you must stock up with all the necessary tools:
- roulette;
- construction pencil;
- paper knife;
- level or plumb;
- roller and container for glue;
- bucket and device for mixing the composition;
- a small paint brush for applying glue to hard-to-reach areas;
- brush or cloth napkin to smooth wallpaper;
- ladder.
It is worth mentioning the modern development - the substrate for wallpaper. This is a rolled material consisting of three layers: polyethylene foam is located in the middle, and the two outer layers are made of non-woven fabric, paper or cork. And the type of pasting paper should be chosen on the basis of the required properties. If you want to decorate a room in which there will be excessive humidity, it is better not to use a paper backing. And the cork coating is the most environmentally friendly.
There are many advantages to using such a layer: it levels the base,can hide minor imperfections of walls, increases sound insulation and retains heat better. It is easier to glue wallpapers and they become more durable. But you can only use it for thick thick wallpaper, as thin can shine through it.
The surface of the walls before work must be prepared. This is done by priming. A special compound is applied, with the help of which the glue will perform its task better, and there will be fewer different defects.
What is primed?
The stores feature many different compositions for priming walls. But not all of them are suitable for paper wallpaper.
- The simplest option is to choose an adhesive that can be used as a primer. The label usually describes in what proportions it should be diluted for this purpose.
- If the glue does not fit, then you can use the widely sought-after acrylic primer. It is suitable for all surfaces. Acrylic solution has no smell, but it dries for a long time.
Choosing glue
Glue is in the process of decorating wallpaper one of the main materials. Choose it in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer of wallpaper.Sold as a powder and mixed with water to a finished consistency of medium thickness. It is better not to store finished formulations for a long time.
Half a century ago, our predecessors cooked the glue themselves — the starch-based paste paste perfectly fulfilled its role, although it was necessary to use it at one time. But now the shops are full of different types and brands of wallpaper glue. It is best to choose a composition specifically for paper coating. Domestic CMC is widely known on the Russian market. But for those who prefer imported products, you can choose German “Methylan” or French Kleo.
In the case when you need to combine paper coatings with other types, in order not to pick up and not stir several types of glue, you can buy a universal one.
But its composition is full of chemical additives. Therefore, without the need for better not to use it. Non-woven glue is also suitable for paper. But a thin coating can deform from a heavy solution.
The required amount of the composition can be determined on the basis of the recommendations on the package. It is usually indicated how many square meters a box or a bag with a mixture is designed for.
How to apply?
On the laid out wallpaper, the glue is applied with a special roller or a wide paint brush in the direction from the center to the edges. It is necessary to ensure that a large amount of glue does not accumulate along the edge, so that later it does not have to be rubbed off from the neighboring canvases. To work out the composition must be carefully the entire sheet, leaving no empty seats. This will eliminate the defects later. Smear single-layer trellis need a thin layer, as they are very fragile. A multi-layered material is better to lubricate abundant.
We select the surface
The walls can be in a different state, and it is not always possible to immediately start pasting. Sticker on old wallpaper - not the best idea. The previous layers need to be carefully removed, because you cannot be sure whether they have been properly glued, whether new ones will peel off with them. The pattern of the former coating can tread through the new one, or the former seams will be visible.
Previously, it was considered an excellent solution to pre-paste over the wall with newspapers, and then place the wallpaper. This option is unacceptable for the above reasons.
Trying to save time on repairs in new buildings, some are trying to glue wallpaper on the plaster.But this option also does not give the best result. Plastered walls will absorb a huge amount of glue because of its loose structure, and a new coating can simply fall off. On the old plaster it is also necessary to remove all the irregularities, the remnants of materials from its surface, to polish to an even condition and go through a clean putty and primer, and only then finish the wall with new material.
What to do if the wall is painted. In this case, it all depends on the applied composition. If the paint was a water-based paint, then you can glue the wallpaper onto it, after having previously been primed. The remaining compounds will need to be removed. But this process is very time consuming. Therefore, in order to apply a wallpaper coating on the paint, you can sand off the surface to roughen and rub with a primer so that the glue adheres better to the wall.
The room can be erected partitions of fiberboard or drywall. These materials are also used to level the walls in private and old houses with large defects and curvature. Ordinary wallpaper on drywall can be glued, if you pre-treat it with a putty and primer.Otherwise, there may be inscriptions, color sheets, the grip will not be perfect, and the wallpaper will move away. In the case of MDF, processing is also required. Plus, mount partitions with screws. Consequently, large joints are formed. To neither them nor the heads of the screws could be seen through the wallpaper, at the initial stage it is necessary to apply a rough putty.
The concrete base requires complete pre-treatment of the surface, otherwise its dark color and multiple defects will be visible through the paper.
Technology
In order to properly glue thin paper wallpapers onto the walls, you need to strictly follow the rules and technology of this process:
- clean the room of all objects and make sure that the wall surfaces are properly prepared;
- prepare all the necessary tools and materials. It will take a stepladder or chair;
- on the walls need to put markup. To begin to glue, as a rule, from the window. Using a level or plumb line, define the vertical and mark it with a pencil without drawing a clear and bright line;
- It is necessary to cut the wallpaper. If they have a drawing, it will be necessary to adjust the webs so that they fit well.Measure out the fabric of the desired length, taking into account the allowance of about 10 centimeters for fitting in height. Using a ruler, a knife and a pencil cut the desired piece. If you are sure that the distance from the floor to the ceiling without strong drops, you can cut all full strips at once. The remains will go on pasting at the windows and above the door;
- It is necessary to dilute the glue, as it is written on the package, mixing it thoroughly. Apply glue to the wallpaper with a roller and distribute it around the entire perimeter of the sheet;
- stripes are advised to fold in half or in layers, so that it is convenient to move them into place. But this must be done very carefully, so as not to stain the front side and leave no room;
- considering the gap under the baseboard, put the wallpaper on top, focusing on the vertical;
- now it is necessary to smooth the canvas with a rubber roller or clean cloth so that there are no swollen places;
- remove all excess from above and below with a stationery knife. Traces of glue on the finishing surface are immediately removed with a damp sponge;
- A new strip is glued end-to-end or overlapped, carefully so that the seam is not visible.
On a single-layer wallpaper one layer of glue, and immediately dock them to the wall. Smooth them with a napkin, not pressing hard.Gluing heavy wallpaper, for example, with an embossed duplex on a paper base, is somewhat different: glue is applied to the sheet and to the wall. Wallpapers can be pre-folded to soak for 3-5 minutes. Smooth the canvas with a brush. Glueing simple wallpaper without seams to one person should be carried out in stages, making measurements, cutting, spreading each individual strip with glue and joining it after the previous one. After completing all these steps for several canvases, you can come up with a lot of irreparable mistakes.
To stick the wallpaper without bubbles with your own hands, you need to make sure that the wall is well primed and does not have holes and crevices. It is necessary to spread the glue evenly and completely cover the whole wallpaper sheet with it. And during bonding, carefully smooth irregularities in all directions, avoiding air bubbles.
The process of cornering has its own subtleties. Paper wallpaper glues in this case overlap. One canvas is brought to the next wall a couple of centimeters. The second canvas is glued to the first of the corner itself. But if the angle is uneven, the result will be sloppy.
In the second version, the first strip is also glued to the wall, but slightly larger.Orient the second lane vertically along the far edge from the corner. And glue on the first overlap by 2 cm. Then, using the level, mark the vertical and cut the seam with a paper knife. Remove the remnants of wallpaper and glue the lagging places. In the outer corners, the technology is similar to the second method.
Why bubble?
Bubbles on the wallpaper can occur due to drafts in the room, if you missed the canvas badly before gluing, the wall is poorly processed and there is air in the irregularities, if the glue is too heavy for paper coating, or you have not properly smoothed the canvas. Do not allow the wallpaper to soak too long with glue or bend thin wallpaper and grease with a thick layer of glue so that later they do not wrinkle.
Secrets and Tips
When cutting, do not immediately cut all the material. It is easy to make a mistake, but it is impossible to fix it. Wallpapers, especially single-layered ones, should be spread with glue on one strip and immediately glued, and not all stripes should be soaked at the same time, as recommended by the finishing rules. It is better to cut off the excess fabric from the top and bottom after sticking the fabric. It will be easier to correct. Dock wallpaper should be immediately after sticking, and not after you smoothed the surface.If the glue got on the outside of the wallpaper, do not rub it with a cloth. You can damage the paint or texture, especially in cheap wallpaper.
How fast dry?
Paper wallpaper dries much faster than other types due to its porous structure and breathability. After gluing, on average, it should take from 8 to 24 hours to complete drying. But if the room is cold and high humidity, time may increase by 2 times.
