Table-sill: original ideas of the organization of space in the nursery
The table-sill in our days is a convenient and functional stylistic design solution for the children's room. This design is great for small rooms with poor natural lighting.
Features: pros and cons
The main trend of the modern arrangement of residential space is the maximum involvement of each unit of the area of the internal space of the room. The modern interior takes into account the role of any element, so today even the window sill has ceased to be only a stand for placing flowers. Now it is used as a table top in the design of the work area in a teenager’s own room.
Today, such products are produced fairly wide and are an alternative to the usual writing or computer desk. The result is a very functional version of the child’s desktop, which is now located along the window, organically combined with cabinets or shelves for its educational supplies.
Like any product, such a table-sill has certain advantages and disadvantages.
The natural daylight of the built-in desk greatly benefits in comparison with the artificial one from table lamps and other lamps, the need for which now appears only at nightfall.
Another advantage of using a windowsill instead of a regular table, which occupies a certain part of the space somewhere inside the student’s room, is a significant saving in usable space. The use of such a table should be appreciated by the owners of apartments with small rooms.
The positive point of using such an element of the interior of a boy’s or girl’s school-age room is the presence of a heating radiator under the window. Due to this, the child’s feet will not freeze with the onset of cold weather, and a considerable space under the table, which is a continuation of the window sill, will create enough space for the child’s feet.
However, when using this device in sunny weather, there is excessive illumination from the window of the working space, there is some disturbance of the circulating movement of air and the opportunity to otkorirovat windows with curtains is lost.
The idea of a desk combined with a window sill should be enjoyed by residents of “Khrushchev” and families with several children of school age, when it becomes necessary to allocate for them a separate table for classes.
Use in the interior
The table-sill will provide an opportunity to create a place in the nursery for a child where he can safely engage in modeling, drawing or, for example, designing, without interfering with other family members. Such a tabletop will be of undoubted interest for the child, because it will always give him the opportunity to combine his usual activities with observation of what is happening outside the window. A table of this kind in a child’s room can also be equipped with such a child-friendly addition as drawers.
They will give the girl the opportunity to tidy up their children's "jewelry" and puppet outfits. The boy will receive garages for his cars and “arsenals” for placing toy weapons.
A table top-sill for small rooms will allow the owners to free up space for installing a bedside table for video equipment or audio equipment. It is no less easy to make a desk a windowsill that is available on the balcony. As a result, the house master, for example, on wood, will have his own separate workshop, where he can work on his products, without interfering with other family members.
The use of a desk as a continuation of the window sill will create a better illumination for the studentthat, undoubtedly, will contribute both to the safety of his vision, and saving electricity.
Materials
A large table in the form of a window sill in a nursery can be made of solid wood, for example, a product made of oak, ash, maple or cherry wood. Such a preform is subjected to drying, polishing, processing with mastic, varnishing from several layers in order to give it the necessary external aesthetics.
A cheaper option would be to use MDF or HDF plates with a thickness of about 20 mm., work with which represents less complexity. The table top of them can be given any shape, cutting out the contours of the table of the desired configuration from such a material using an electric jigsaw. This plate thickness is chosen so that the table made of it does not create obstacles for the free movement of the window sash. To protect against moisture, the workpiece is twice saturated with linseed oil.
Chipboard panel is also suitable as a blank, the preliminary treatment of which consists in applying putty on it and painting it in the desired color or in pasting it with PVC film. As a blank for the future of the table is also suitable plastic or laminate plate.
In finished form, such a table will not burn out under the rays of the sun, there will be no scratches on it, and caring for it will not be difficult.
Making your own hands
Work should begin with determining the shape of the product, so as not to disrupt the overall design of the room. The manufacture of such a table should be dealt with at the time of replacing the windows before starting work on the slopes. In the case when new windows have already been installed, the tabletop must be placed at the site of the removed sill or fastened over the “liquid nails” or epoxy adhesive composition that is available with glue. The height of the table should be about 75 cm, and its width - 50 cm.
To perform such work, it is necessary to have a prefabricated stencil. On it the marking is applied on preparation. According to the layout drawn in this way, a piece of the required shape is cut with an electric jigsaw. Holes are made in it above the location of the heating battery to eliminate obstacles to convection of warm air in the room.
Next, the finished tabletop is on the bars in the window opening from the inside of the window and on the metal stamped profile with perforation, attached to the wall at a right angle. The level is checked horizontal installation. The resulting gaps are filled with foam. When the foam finally hardens, all joints are processed with a sealing gel.
For the manufacture of the legs of such a table is taken chrome steel tube, cut into fragments of the required length. The lower part of these tubes is closed with plastic plugs, and their upper side is attached to the tabletop with a flange and screws.
To make the product complete, you can glue the ends of the table top with an edging profile matched to the gamut with its main color.
